The most valuable things I've ever learn when doing custom woodworking is never to build something without a drawing plan. You are inviting a lot of nuisance without it. Your project will take longer to complete and you will be very much unhappy with the end result if there were no easy to follow plans.

My advice is that an open deck without a roof may look good but not a very practical for you and your guests.
