Most of us would assume that doing custom woodworking is something terrifying. We are afraid of unsuccessful project or afraid of making mistakes. If you ever felt this way then you don't have to worry about it. I have done many custom woodworkings and I want to share some tips on how to do it. Everything starts with the way we think and see something.

Doing it is the first thing involved in custom woodworking. We can read a thousand books about it or even have a workshop complete with all the equipments but unless we don't start by cutting the first wood then the learning process are not even begin.

Just do it. Cut your first wood slowly, cut it even though end result is horrifying, and cut it even if your neighbors would laugh at you. Just keep doing it. Don't just stand there and do nothing.

After you have done it, patience is a must. You will be making mistakes, no doubt about it, so don't worry too much of it because it WILL happens. We have to make mistakes so that we could make it better in the future. Don't give up, check your mistakes and try to think why it happens. Then try again. If I'm doing an important project, I start off with scrap material. This is to ensure that I could pore over the workflow before commencing it on the real bits and pieces.

Imagination is something that is equally important in custom woodworking. It is like art. The good thing about imagination is it's free and can be enthused. Doing custom woodworking needs a plan but I try to make each of the pieces better. It's like we're trying a new recipe. We follow the rules but in the mean time we do try to add a new flavor to it. If I'm making stuff which is for sold then I would follow the original standard plan. But if it was for someone special then I really wanted it to be unique and different.

Make sure you use safety equipments and follow the proper handling rules while doing custom woodworking. But then again try not to be intimidated with all of your tools! Sometimes we could be a little bit too careful. Just try to make the tools as if they were part of your own body. I'm not talking about something fiction. You can be one with your tools beginning with something that most of us avoid it which is, reading the manuals!

Now you understand that it's not that hard. It really involves doing it, making mistakes, do it again and creativity. There is no ultimate method of learning custom woodworking so no one really can say that the way you're doing it is wrong.
